and other materials were diverted from
the landfill, which made up 87 percent of
the overall waste.
Reusing materials at hand is also an
essential part of cutting costs and waste.
Companies like The Refinishing Touch
re-engineer and refinish furniture to
lengthen its lifespan. Mario Insenga,
founder and president, says his goal is to
extend the life of these assets, lengthening
the time from when the tree comes out
of the forest to when it hits the landfill.
“We take any number of pieces of
furniture and look at how to best utilize
the material that’s found inside that
building already. Why would you go buy
a new piece of oak?” Insenga says. At a
time when budgets are tight, return on
investment is critical in residence halls.
“The misconception is that green costs
more money,” Insenga says. However,
transforming old furniture with 80s
designs into contemporary pieces for new

buildings cuts costs that can be invested
into other energy efficient features.
Conducting waste audits highlights
the areas where recycling and
reuse efforts can be improved, thus
contributing to a campus’s overall
sustainability. Assessment reveals what
resources are being wasted and why,
especially money. From dining hall
preparation to residence renovations,
these audits help provide economic
solutions and create opportunities
to educate students and staff about
sustainability. Sometimes the solutions
are elegantly simple: putting a bin in
the right place, measuring a spoon, and
weighing what’s on a plate. ts

Ten years ago, recycling was the biggest focus of
waste management efforts at Colorado State. With
such a high percentage of compostable items
being wasted or mistakenly recycled, investing in
a functioning compost system became critical. The
Earth Flow composter, located at their Foothills
campus, is an automated 30-yard bin that accepts
up to 2,000 pounds of material a day. Proximity to
the equine center provides access to the organic
material – straw, wood chips, and horse manure
– needed to mix with the food waste in a 2:1 ratio.
In part powered by a solar power plant, the Earth
Flow receives 10,000 pounds of pulp and organic
material each week. The university wanted
the endeavor to operate as a living laboratory,
according to Miyamoto, and they hired three parttime individuals to provide the needed expertise.
One person delivers the food waste and loads the
material, a student interns for 10 hours per week
to conduct soil testing and maintain organic recipe
standards, and a sustainability member ensures
proper sorting of material, educates students, and
develops ideas for expansion.
