Countertops placed at a helpful height make for easy
living in Nugent Hall.

number of accommodations
that can or should be made in
the process of renovation or in
programmatic decisions that
will assist students with special
needs. Accommodations will
vary based on student needs, but
even without a specific request
they should be part of each
institution’s renovation plans.
A review of numerous campus
websites provides insight into the
accommodations being made in
student rooms and public areas.
In student rooms, the following
alterations should be considered
on a case-by-case or permanent
basis.
Desks should be raised/
lowered/customized for
students in wheelchairs or
using other mechanical devices.
Though many desks are free
standing, others are built in and
require more customization to
accommodate a student.

Closets (hanging and storage)
should be customized. Many
closets are a simple rectangular
box with a rod for hanging
clothes. Universal design
principles indicate that cabinetry
in closets (and other areas of the
room, for that matter) should not
contain open shelving. The UWWhitewater residence hall has
pull drawers or trays that slide
out from cabinets. Of course,
these drawers and trays must be
at a height that is accessible for
students in wheelchairs.
Lofts or captains beds must
be adjustable to allow students
access and egress. Beds should
be designed to a setting that will
allow for ease of transfer from
wheelchair to bed and vice versa.
Visual alerting devices
allow students with hearing
impairments to see a visual
cue when a fire alarm sounds
