or someone is at the door. Doorbell
strobes are a relatively inexpensive
accommodation, while strobes in
rooms to alert students of a fire alarm
normally need to be hard wired into
the fire alarm system.
Restrooms are difficult to
customize without completely
renovating them. When renovating
a restroom, the appropriate turning
radius for wheelchairs must be
considered. Showers must have
variable height showerheads and
a seat to allow safe transfer from a
wheelchair. The shower should not
have a floor lip that does not allow a
wheelchair to enter it. Appropriate
grab bars should be located in
showers and next to the toilet.
Accommodations are usually
necessary to allow students in
wheelchairs to have access to their
rooms. According to DORMA-USA.
com, doors of proper width with kick
plates and closers that require a force
of five pounds or less to open are
all that the code requires. However,
wireless transmitters for automatic
door openers and/or keyless entry to
room doors better serve those with
more severe mobility issues.

doors that are accessible to students
with disabilities. Kitchens should have
appliances with controls that can be
accessed within reach and without
reaching across hot burners.
Water fountains must be at
a height that allows students in
wheelchairs to use them. Oftentimes,
two water fountains are installed: one
at traditional height and one at the
height described by the ADA.
Carpeting in residence halls is
replaced on a regular schedule. The
ADA requires carpeting to have a

maximum pile height of one-half inch
for ease of wheelchair use.

Vertical space makes for
prime real estate!

In public areas, there are several
alterations that should be made to
accommodate students with a variety
of needs. Elevators are expensive
to renovate, and many of them do
not provide the necessary radius
or auditory cues to assist users
with limitations. An inexpensive
accommodation may be to install
button panels with Braille for the
visually impaired. Braille signage is
a renovation and new construction
requirement, not necessarily an
accommodation in campus housing.
Programming spaces must
be accessible to students with
disabilities. If such a space is
not accessible and a person with
a disability wishes to attend, the
program must be moved.
Laundry rooms should have
