evaluations. One-on-one meetings are
important not only for successfully
orienting a new employee but also for
assessing their ongoing performance.
During these meetings, performance
metrics are established and should be
evaluated at key intervals (e.g., 30, 60,

90 days). Some of these performance
metrics can come in the form of a
formal evaluation from the department
or institution or from a professional
development plan.
Utilize the Kirkpatrick Model. Donald
Kirkpatrick, professor emeritus of the
University of Wisconsin in Madison and
past president of the American Society
for Training and Development, created
a model for training evaluation which
is considered an industry standard
across the human resource and training
communities and can be integrated into
an onboarding assessment. The four
levels of the model evaluate reaction
(how employees respond to the training),
learning (the extent to which they learned
what was presented), behavior (how they
applied the learning to their jobs), and
results (how learning outcomes were
achieved).

already utilizing many of these strategies
in one way or another. Staff may not
realize they are utilizing them, and the
department may not be employing them
in a purposeful manner, so it requires
only one more step to implement an
onboarding process in a more intentional
way. This becomes increasingly important
as more and more housing departments
are called upon to define the work they
do and to justify their budgetary needs
for staff recruitment and development.

departments and supervisors get the most
from their new employees and reap the
rewards of their staff investment. ts
