At DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, “Student staff receive training from university counseling services and from the dean of students office (community resources specialist and alcohol and substance abuse prevention specialist),” says Deb Schmidt-Rogers, director of residential education. They also recently hired a director of health promotion and wellness who will become part of the training schedule. The training and education of staff are key to a comprehensive mental health program that goes beyond simply sending worried or worrisome students to the campus counseling center. Residence life professionals can serve as needed reinforcements. 36 Talking STick Laurie Berry, director of housing and residence life at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, explains that they train staff in a number of ways. “Professional staff are trained in QPR (techniques from the Question, Persuade and Refer Institute).
