ToMs: “start something That Matters”

The TOMS company sponsors a “one for one” business model that provides a pair of shoes
for an underprivileged child for every pair bought. Many schools host “One Day Without
Shoes” and paint your own TOMS events, but there is more to founder Blake Mycoskie’s
mission. James Madison University is the first campus to base its residential staff training
on Mycoskie’s book Start Something That Matters and its six themes: find your story, face
your fears, be resourceful without resources, keep it simple, build trust, and understand
that giving is a good business. “The way I understand the TOMS company message is
that no one should go through life without something as basic and simple as a pair of
shoes,” hall director Irene Asuncion says. “This kind of philanthropic philosophy rings
strongly with the JMU community especially, because almost every student here wants
to ‘be the change,’ and almost every student actively seeks opportunities to achieve that.”
After summer training, each member of the student and professional staff received a pair
of TOMS Campus Classics in James Madison’s colors of purple and gold, providing new
shoes for 284 needy children in the process.
By starting hall programs focused on causes like recycling, giving, and community,
resident adviser Patrick Flood says the staff has been able “to connect with the residents in
a different way by allowing them to think about what is near and dear to their heart. This
makes them feel that they’re having a huge impact on their college experience and allows
ORL [Office of Residence Life] to give them some of the resources and guidance needed to
strive for their goals.” Asuncion started a program tracker on the hall office bulletin board
where each resident assistant builds a TOMS-shaped shoe with each program they conduct.
“My RAs and I admired the ‘giving’ idea of TOMS and the generous, positive attitude it
represented, and so far we have modeled that attitude with our residents, and it has certainly
translated to the positive atmosphere that our community currently sustains,” she says.
