job responsibilities.” Young started
with the basics of learning Excel and
understanding departmental finance
and then went into the specific
requirements of their positions.
“Throughout the process, I tried to
take into account their needs and work
environment. They work all hours of
the day, so requiring paperwork at 8:00
a.m. on Monday morning would be
cruel. While always keeping the big
picture in mind, I was able to make
small adjustments so the hall staff
could achieve my expectations but not
become overwhelmed.” Argalas finds
that five things are helpful to consider.
“Develop a results-driven team to
work on improving efficiencies, solicit
buy-in from participants and/or other
departments affected by the change,
provide data to justify the requested
change, be creative and think outside
the box, and be patient – don’t expect
change to happen overnight.”
Perhaps one of the most simple
and powerful pieces of advice comes
from Stina Schoneck, assistant
director of housing for accounting
services at the University of Florida
in Gainesville. From her perspective,
“Communication is key.” In her work
on multiple projects she always makes
herself available to answer questions.
As a result of the clear and open lines
of communication, she says, “We have
received a lot of great feedback, and
many of the projects are now within
their budget.”
Change takes time, and in our
ever increasingly fast-paced work
environments it seems absurd that
it takes so much time for something
to work more efficiently or to serve
students better. But time, like money,
is an investment. Remember, small
steps will help you implement a
stronger process, and that process will
