Creating a visual and symbolic connection
between students’ social and academic
experiences was the first goal of the
Campus Commons project at Texas
Christian University. With 630 beds and
217,000 square feet, this four-building
housing project also fulfilled the
university’s strategic objective of becoming
a more residential campus. Set within
the context of a unified space that also
included a student union, dining halls, and
recreational spaces, the Campus Commons
created a stunning mix of buildings where
students can live, eat, play, socialize, study,
and engage.
Respecting the existing Greek Revivalstyle architecture on the TCU campus was
vital. Contextual materials, including brick,
stone, and Ludowici roof tiles, were used
to unify the new structures with the rest
of the campus. The end result is a campus
transformed. Campus Commons created
a truly distinctive architectural, artistic,
and enriched campus core. The mixture of
a traditional colonnade with media and
technology rooms flanking the exterior
Great Lawn generates social and academic
spaces that will serve as a vibrant center
of campus life to be used by students and
staff for years to come.
As an extension of the Campus
Commons concept, the Worth Hills
Village will become part of the campus
before the end of the year. Designed in
the Classical Revival architectural style,
this project employs the existing TCU
palette of building materials, including
buff-colored brick, Ludowici roof tiles, and
limestone accents. Worth Hills will provide
approximately 1,800 new beds, a new

Greek Village, and additional student dining and
parking. Project leaders are seeking LEED Gold
at a minimum. During the year, 475 beds will be
completed, while the remaining beds, parking
garage, and dining hall will be completed by
December 2014.
“The Campus Commons transformed the
center of our campus,” says Craig Allen, director
of residential services. “The Commons has
become ‘downtown TCU,’ a hub of activity,
a place to see and be seen. The Commons
has helped to shape a new sense of pride in
campus living, and I’ll never forget speaking to
one of the residents the fall it opened who told
me ‘Housing told us it was going to be nice, but
I didn’t realize it would be this nice!’”
