the information into a comprehensive
story. Staff must be clear about what
they are doing and why they are
doing it – and must hold themselves
accountable for following through.
Staff must also remember that what
lies at the heart of assessment efforts
is the responsibility to support
programs and services that promote
student learning. As Christakis
emphasizes, “It all contributes to
a culture of assessment; the more
buy-in with staff, the more effective
assessment is in terms of making
differences in the lives of our students
– which is why we’re all here.”
Whether or not members of the
assessment team are experienced
with the process, there are a number
of ways to establish productive
practices that serve immediate
needs and lay the foundation for a

culture of assessment. Plans and
projects for assessment should be
promoted throughout the division,
not just in one department or
another. Many institutions have
successfully incorporated assessment
in departmental overviews. The
University of Texas at Arlington asks
departments to share assessment
efforts at annual divisional retreats.
Fordham University in New York
has a similar practice, going so far
as to outline specific presentation
requirements, including the need for
candor. Departments are encouraged
to openly share both positive and
negative findings, as well as lessons
learned. Giving assessment such
prominence creates an open forum for
discussing what areas need attention
and for planning future collaborative
programmatic or evaluative efforts.

Efforts to encourage collaboration
will succeed if representatives from
many different areas and departments
actively participate in the process as
part of a committee that focuses on
assessment efforts. California State
University, Fullerton’s committee is
made up of volunteers from nearly
all areas within their student affairs
division, and all committee members
engage in the discussion of goals,
research methods, outcomes, and
implications for findings. Over
time, experienced members rotate
out to serve as at-large resources,
while new or other staff begin
working with the committee. In
addition to forging personal and
professional relationships, the
