Omitting individuals or groups of
individuals for the sake of moving
faster often makes it harder to get
buy-in and can breed an environment
where professionals don’t feel included
or valued, so even if the decisionmaking process can go faster by doing
this, there is a lot of management
in order to get others onboard and
help them understand the value they
provide to your institution. On the flip
side, having more people does provide
for a much richer dialogue when
everyone brings their skill sets and
focus areas to the table for discussions.
If you can get everyone onboard all the
way up, there are some pretty powerful
and influential individuals at larger
institutions, so that is a definite benefit
for large schools. Just the momentum
needed to get there is often pretty
sizable.

Frazee: I agree with the buy-in
comments regarding entry-level staff,
but I really feel that with the size of
an administrative team of 100-plus it
is just not possible for every voice to
come to the decision-making table.
The really important thing to keep
in mind is the communication, the
roll-out, and the ongoing feedback that
happens throughout the transition
period of the change.

Collins: Barb, I completely agree.
In an ideal setting, we would build
consensus on how/when/where
change would happen (this is
somewhat of a residence life model
which has multiple people holding
the same job). Unfortunately, that is
not always able to happen due to the
complexity of our organization. At

the same time, I work hard with my
leadership team to create opportunities
for our staff to solve problems on the
ground in order to provide outstanding
and instant customer service to our
conference guests and students. There
has to be a mix of consensus building,
decision makers who understand
the scope of responsibility, and staff
training on change management.
Simply stated, it is about context and
scope: Are we talking about changing
a department-wide policy (e.g., a 10year furniture plan) or creating a new
program (e.g., a hostel for early arrival
students)? Who needs to have input
on what? Who is the final decision
maker? tS
