When Do They Call for Help?

Training staff and students to make the right call during an
emergency
Jen is at a college party where many of
the students have been indulging in
a long round of binge drinking, and
as she walks towards the kitchen she
notices someone passed out on the
couch. She tries to rouse him, but he
is nonresponsive. What does she do?
Call 911? That would be risky. She’s also
pretty drunk, and, worse, underage. She
can’t afford to lose her scholarship and
doesn’t want her coach to know she’s
been drinking. Can she risk getting
into trouble herself? She runs through
the options: Maybe she can alert other
people around her so someone else can
deal with the problem; maybe she can
keep trying to wake him up, or maybe

it’s better to just let him sleep it off.
Maybe he’s too far gone for that. She
has heard stories about people dying
from alcohol poisoning, and she doesn’t
want that on her conscience. Maybe
she can get help without getting into
trouble herself.
The problem here is not just the
potential medical emergency. It’s
Jen’s ambivalence about what to do,
a hesitation that is delaying needed
help. If she is a student at any of the
91 colleges and universities in the U.S.
that have amnesty programs for these
situations, as estimated by the group
Students for Sensible Drug Policy, she
is safe from the negative consequences
