In Practice: The Quest
In a recent presentation and a research
note soon to be released, we examined
national data from the ACUHO-I/EBI Resident
Assessment and used the theme of the quest
as a foundational element. The quest for this
story is a departmental mission or desire: RA
relationships matter. The story begins with
the quest, and we lay out all the places where
the quest is highlighted in our institutions,
including campus tours, student orientation,
RA training, and one-on-one meetings with
RAs. Then the story moves into assessment
data by showing the percentages of students
who are satisfied with their RAs’ efforts to
get to know them. From there, it progresses
with data comparing residents who had
relationships with their RA and those who did
not. As you may expect, results showed that
residents who have relationships with their RA
are more satisfied with their RA and have a
greater sense of belonging in their community.
A twist in the story arises when we look at
data about areas not typically connected with
having a relationship to an RA, such as facilities
and dining services; residents who have a
relationship with their RA are more satisfied
with repairs and their dining experience. The
story concludes with an up-ending because
the quest is celebrated. The audience is happy
because the entire narrative reinforces our
experiences and supports our training and
programming efforts.
