hall crew association structure
The Hall Crew Association structure is modeled very closely on that of The Crew, with
some adaptations to meet the needs of students in the residence halls. The structure is
relatively flat and provides specific duties for each role. The combination of Hall Crew
and RHA on campus at TCU resulted in a doubling of the number of titled leadership
positions within these two organizations, which created more leadership opportunities
and involved more students in the development process.
A student director board oversees the Hall Crew Association. These students work
directly with the Hall Crew advisors to implement the program on a daily basis across 13
residence hall communities.

* The Hall Crew director oversees the board and facilitates meetings, acting as the
president of the organization. The director also works with the Hall Crew leaders in every
hall. The primary role of the director is to make sure that programs are implemented and
that the Hall Crew leaders develop their skills throughout the implementation process.
* The director of operations manages what is needed for the events and oversees logistics
and budgets for the Hall Crew. The director works with operations coordinators in each of
the halls to ensure that events are set up and run smoothly.
* The director of marketing oversees all the marketing functions of the Hall Crews and
works with the in-house graphic designers. Once an event is submitted for review and
approved, marketing is developed and then sent back to the marketing coordinators in the
halls for distribution.
* The director of service and recognition implements service opportunities within the hall
as well as creating random acts of kindness for the residents. This position, along with the
coordinators who work with the director, is a direct outgrowth of TCU's desire to positively
impact the lives of their students.
* The director of membership manages the Hall Crew as a group and provides leadership
development and training for the members. This position also coordinates the Hall Crew
Academy.
* The director of community relations is a primary carryover from RHA. The director works
with students in the residence halls to voice residents' concerns or needs to either the
housing office or the Student Government Association.

The benefits of
collaboration
Student affairs professionals, business
executives, and teachers have been
preaching the importance of teamwork
forever. We know the importance of
sharing, the positive consequences of
buy-in, and the morale gained when
people position themselves toward
organizational missions. We have all
heard mottos like "Many hands make
light work" and "Teamwork makes the
dream work." Collaboration makes
sense as a way to use both human
and financial resources efficiently.
So why is it still so difficult to initiate
the process? Part of the reason is
that - in an atmosphere of increasing
student demands, decreasing budgets,
and leaner organizational charts -
competition for resources can be
fierce. Another reason is basic human
nature. Though positioning your own
program or department as critical may
seem like a logical way to get a larger
share of the resources, it may not be
the best strategy. As the situation in
"The Prisoners' Dilemma" (one often
analyzed in game theory) shows, acting
in one's own self-interest can have a
worse outcome than cooperating with
others. As the Business Insider website
explains the basic version of this game,
"Two criminals are arrested, but police
can't convict either on the primary
charge, so they plan to sentence them
to a year in jail on a lesser charge.
Each of the prisoners, who can't
communicate with each other, is given
the option of testifying against their
partner. If they testify, and their partner
remains silent, the partner gets three
years and they go free. If they both
testify, both get two. If both remain
silent, they each get one." The dilemma
is that each feels he will be better off
confessing than remaining silent;
because each is acting in his own selfinterest, each confesses, which turns
out to be a worse outcome (two years)
than if they had both kept silent (one
year).
