It is not only students in crisis or having
behavioral concerns who benefit from these
programs: A 2004 study from the Higher
Education Research Institute at the University of
California, Los Angeles, found that college students
nationwide are looking to cultivate spirituality and
deeper meaning in their lives. Eboo Patel, executive
director of the non-profit organization Interfaith
Youth Core, wrote in a 2012 essay for The Chronicle
of Higher Education that "interfaith work is not
just for religious campuses, and creating a 'safe
space' for different faiths cannot be the ultimate
goal." The crucial question, he says, is seeing "how
people from different faith backgrounds get along
and what they do together." Steve Brown, director
of the counseling center at East Tennessee State
University in Johnson City, agrees, saying that
all institutions of higher education have a much
greater task than "getting students through to
graduation." They have a higher calling. "There is

developmental work that we who work with college
students are called to do. We absolutely need to
help students create meaningful, purposeful, and
enjoyable lives," he says.
Residence halls are ideal environments for
students to explore questions of meaning and
purpose, because they are safe places where
diverse people can come together, have honest
conversations, and form true communities, says
Rabbi Gail Swedroe, assistant director with Hillel,
the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, at the
University of Florida. She believes that in residence
halls students have a unique opportunity to learn
from another's perspective and find validity in
that person's truth. "College is one of the few
times that people have the luxury of engaging in
philosophical, thought-provoking conversations
with people that they may never encounter in their
communities of origin, in an environment where
no one is trying to push a particular way of thinking
