exploring the Big Questions
Aliza Rosenthal helped to research, develop, and coordinate the Meaning and Purpose living-learning community at Miami
University, which launched in the fall of 2013. She shares information about three free programs that were particularly
successful at facilitating dialogue and reflection among residents.

God in the Box is a documentary by filmmaker Nathan Lang about how people view God, spirituality, and religion
that juxtaposes footage of academic and religious leaders with footage of everyday people. More information and the
trailer are available at godinthebox.com. If the film is not available at your campus library, you can use this format to
build your own box. We did this to create our campus's version of the film and showed it during the screening of the
documentary. Great conversation followed.

"Blinded" was a program my colleague brought to our campus from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Participants are
blindfolded and led to a table so they do not know the other students at the table with them, and a facilitator leads
conversation about difficult topics like race, sexuality, religion, spirituality, and gender issues. This format allows
participants to engage in honest and open conversation without being self-conscious or worrying about who is at the
table with them. The hope - and the reality when we assessed the program - was that students were able to talk about
their more deeply held beliefs and values without feeling judged.

"Ask Big Questions" is affiliated with the National Hillel organization. We used this program to spark grassroots
conversations among students. After placing banners around campus with a big question, we asked students to join in a
larger conversation. We also facilitated this program on a smaller scale in many of our residence hall communities. See
