A Comparison of First-Generation and NonFirst Generation Students
The Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education has an increasing push to
widen access to higher education for more people. In an effort to show
that it would be worthwhile to target first-generation students, a new
study compared the first-generation and non-first generation students to
identify the main characteristics and qualities of each group. After polling
a large group of first-year students at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Pulau
Palang, the study found that typical first-generation students were from
small towns and rural areas where the monthly household incomes were
lower than they were for families of non-first generation students, who
were typically from large urban cities. This study was published in the

In a time when college costs continue to rise, it is not uncommon for
traditional and nontraditional college students to have the added responsibility
of student employment to balance with their already hectic school schedules
and personal lives. A recent study by Rebecca Mounsey, Michael Vandehey, and
George Diekhoff, "Working and Non-Working University Students: Anxiety,
Depression, and Grade Point Average," published in the College Student Journal
in June of 2013, explored the differences and similarities between working and
non-working students in terms of their mental health, grade point average, and
perceptions of student employment. The study found that while there was no
significant impact on grade point average or difference in depression between
the two groups, working students did display higher levels of anxiety and stress
than did non-working students.
