Partnerships in Programming
exist solely for this purpose. At
Creighton University, during the
2011-12 academic year, the division of
student life's programming team - a
committee composed of professional
staff representing the 11 functional
areas of the division - was tasked to
create a sustainable and collaborative
late-night programming series.
Though they could not rely on big
prizes to attract students or major
funding to support the effort, they
succeeded, creating a program called
CU Afterdark.
From the beginning, CU
Afterdark was a different type of
series. Recognizing that they did
not need more late-night alternative
programming, they focused on what
they did need: a coordinated effort
and the support of an overarching
organization to ration the limited
resources. Predicating the series on
marketing and coordination, they
created the CU Afterdark brand. The
programming team would provide
only two late-night programs a year,
one each semester, and would rely
on departments such as residence
life, student activities, and campus
recreation to provide programs in the
other months. During the first year,
there was one large-scale CU Afterdark
event a month.
Though the program has been
very successful, it needs to rise to the
next level by adopting a more formal
structure. The division of student life's
programming team plans to increase
the diversity of the programs and to
strengthen the impact of CU Afterdark
on campus by adding a student
coordinator. tS
Now in its third year, CU Afterdark
has expanded to include all divisional
events that occur after 8:00 p.m. on
Thursday, Friday, or Saturday nights.
These programs are cross-promoted
with the coordinating department or
organization. Now, a student can look at
the divisional events calendar and find
multiple events each month that take
place in a safe, promoting environment.
Most important, the events are
wonderfully creative and energetic,
including tricycle bowling, jousting,
Sumo wrestling, and Zumba dancing.
