representative strives to establish
relationships with housing
professionals to help make sales,
the housing professional develops
strategic relationships with the
representatives by meeting face
to face over a period of time. The
housing professional should help
the sales representative gain a better
understanding of the specific needs of
the housing operation, the character
of the institution, the nature of the
existing facilities, and the needs for
any upcoming renovations or new
construction." Take time at your
next state, regional, national, or
international conference to reflect
on how exhibitors and sponsors
impact your conference and overall
professional experience. Often, the
booth fees and sponsorship money
that vendors provide help to fund the
conference and training initiatives.
In addition to building
relationships with vendors at
conferences, it is also important
to strengthen and maintain the
relationships on campus. When
reflecting on the work we do for
residents, we often think of how such
things as programming or training
can benefit our residents and staff,
but we should also consider how
the products and services we offer
impact our students. At Florida State
University, vendor presentations
have become part of a coffee-time
program geared toward graduate and
entry-level staff, a program developed
to help new staff gain insight into
facility-related work; part of the
program involves having two to three
companies conduct presentations
on products and services that are
utilized on campus. This allows
new professionals to ask in-depth
questions and to expand their own
professional knowledge base. In
addition, one of the earliest topics for
the year is a one-hour session that
advises new professionals on how
best to connect with exhibitors at
upcoming conferences. In addition to
helping dispel some of the common
misconceptions about working
with vendors and about the exhibit
hall experience, the staff are better
prepared for their first professional
conference.
Challenge yourself or your staff
to think about the companies that
serve the profession. Next time you
are sitting at a meeting discussing
the need for new software, furniture,
or a new construction project,
challenge yourself or your staff to
think about the companies that serve
the profession, and endorse those
companies that support your state,
regional, or international organization.
