hall, and peer ministers, fellow
students who provide residents with
support, programming, and other
opportunities for dialogue about
spirituality.
Residence life staff are not the
only housing professionals creating
opportunities for residents to
experience spirituality: Facilities staff
create spaces to support students'
expression and exploration of
spirituality. Prayer and serenity rooms
are places where residents can relax,
meditate, and reflect. Culturally
relevant kitchens are designed with
separate refrigerators, sinks, and
countertop areas for the preparation
of halal, kosher, or vegan foods. And
restrooms with inclusive features such
as foot washing stations are becoming
more prevalent in residence hall
design. "I think it is about providing
a truly welcoming environment for
students. If my needs can't be met,
it shows that the university does
not place an equal value on me as
a student," says Jennifer Todden,
associate director of housing for
facilities and operations at the
University of Louisville in Kentucky.
"It also says to students who don't
utilize spaces like serenity rooms or
kosher kitchens that diversity is not
just accepted, but important." Todden
also cites Maslow's hierarchy of needs
theory - that everyone is capable of
moving up from the satisfaction of
basic physiological and social needs
to the level of self-actualization - and
suggests that residence hall facilities
can help to establish a true sense
of safety and security for students.
"From a theoretical standpoint, it
seems we are able to help students on
the path to achieving love, belonging,
and self-actualization by creating
environments which support these
more basic physiological needs," she
says.
Opportunities to live authentically
and discuss questions of meaning
and faith are not valuable only for
students; housing professionals often
find that, as they support students'
exploration of spirituality, they reflect
on and gain a deeper understanding
of their own sense of purpose. This is
what happened during an employee
wellness initiative at Miami University
when residence life and other staff
and faculty began a monthly meaningmaking lunch to come together and
discuss what drives them and what
they see as the purpose of their work.
