Membership Dues Reviewed
Since forming almost 65 years ago, ACUHO-I has provided the information and services that allow campus housing
professionals to face the challenges and opportunities of the day. With the direction of the Executive Board and the work
of many volunteers and Central Office staff, ACUHO-I now provides services like digital publications, virtual roundtables,
online courses, and more.
With these additions, the Executive Board had to ask itself a number of questions related to the membership
structure. One question was whether or not the association's current membership rate structure

is sustainable in terms of delivering current member services while remaining fair and equitable
to campuses regardless of size or geographic location. The research results from our members

showed that changes were necessary, and last May the Executive Board voted to adopt a new rate

structure that, if approved by a membership vote, would be implemented in January 2014.

On December 4, voting will open on the institutional membership rate structure. Space does
not allow me to provide all the details here. However, the Executive Board has been resolute in its
desire for full transparency and education in the process. To that end, board members presented
on this issue at a town hall session during the annual conference last June as well as at the
conference's annual business meeting. In addition, a number of articles have been posted on the
ACUHO-I blog, and a webinar was held in October to lay out the process and conclusions drawn
from the data. The webinar can still be viewed on the website.
Since 1994, increases in ACUHO-I membership dues have been connected solely to the
Higher Education Price Index. That is just one reason why it should also be noted that these
recommendations were not made lightly. Several association leaders, staff, and other volunteers
collaborated with McKinley Advisors, Inc. to conduct surveys, telephone interviews, and focus
groups. This information was used to learn more about how professionals viewed and valued
their membership so that any decision could be made from a knowledge-based position.
We are confident that this decision will position your association to better meet your needs and are excited by the
expanded opportunities that these changes will present to our association. I hope that you will take the steps to educate
