Building Blocks

Members share what their go-to resources are for putting
together a complete picture of the latest construction trends
in student housing.
These three buildings (pages 16 and 17) on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are prime examples of staff using their go-to resources for
construction trends.
According to the 2013 College
Construction Report published by
College Planning & Management,
colleges and universities spent a
collective $9.7 billion on campus
construction in 2012. Of that amount,
73 percent was spent on new residence
halls and another 13 percent on
renovations to existing residence halls.
Additionally, according to the 2012
MGT-ACUHO-I Construction Survey,
49 percent of colleges and universities
plan to initiate both new and renovation
construction in the next five years.
When faced with the decision to
construct or renovate a residence hall,
where does one go to research current
trends? We asked our members about

the resources they seek to answer that
question and how they navigate the
process of planning, gathering relevant
data, and implementing that data in
construction and design plans.
Students are the ones who will
inevitably fill the vacant rooms in any
residence hall, whether new or updated.
As Jack Collins, recently retired director
of housing at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign, explains,
many higher education institutions
are competing for students by offering
more and more amenities, so the
first important step is to assess what
