IS AN IMPORTANT APPROACH TO FACILITATING A POSITIVE COLLEGE
EXPERIENCE AND PROMOTING STUDENT EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS.

Faculty engaging sophomores within the sophomore community.

Institutions of higher education have an
opportunity to transform the way we think about
the student experience and student success. This
opportunity can be seized when our learning and
living environments become the drivers of this
success. We know that students who live on campus
for two years perform better academically than those
who move off campus after one year. Graduation
and retention rates are common ways of gauging
student success, but a broader look would include
assessment of a student's ability to apply what
they have learned inside the classroom, to exhibit
enhanced perspectives of global issues, and to
achieve their professional aspirations and personal
success.
Effectively involving students in academic and

social ways is an important approach to facilitating
a positive college experience and promoting student
educational success. To accomplish this goal, it is
pivotal to identify the specific factors that affect
student involvement on campus. A recent study of
the characteristics of successful second-year students
has identified several predictors of their success:
interaction with faculty, living on campus, peer
interaction, institutional commitment, and classroom
engagement (Xueli Wang and Lance KennedyPhillips, Journal of College Student Development,
September/October 2013).
Programs that focus on second-year success
prove to be most effective when they are connected to
strong residential communities. One such program
is the Second-Year Transformational Experience
