REPORTING OUT

Reducing the Health Risks
of College Students
In a recent study, researchers discuss the
results of the first five years of a health
initiative at the City University of New York.
In 2007, CUNY, the nation's largest urban
public university, launched Healthy CUNY, an
initiative designed to offer lifetime protection
against chronic diseases and reduce health
risks that college students face. By initiating
new policies on tobacco and campus food and
creating a dialogue about the role of health in
academic achievement, Healthy CUNY hopes
to be a model for moving higher education
institutions in a healthy direction and
improving the population's health.

Assessing the Connection Between Internet
Addiction and Depression
A recent article discusses the results of a study of the correlation
between Internet addiction and depression among college and
university students. Certain sociological and psychological factors are
evident in students who are both depressed and addicted to the Internet.
Depression may be both the cause and the effect of Internet addiction,
which has a negative impact on academic success because addicted
students lose sleep, are tired, and miss classes.

Assessing the
Effectiveness of AlcoholControl Policies
A recent study of campus alcohol-control
policies investigated the impact of these
policies on students' drinking and whether
or not they were more effective for
residents living on campus or off campus.
Results suggest that place of residence
is an important factor in determining
students' drinking outcomes, as first-year
and male on-campus residents are more
likely to drink on campus and in greater
proportions. Off-campus residents are
less likely to drink on campus but have
a higher probability if they are male and
involved in campus recreation activities.

Increasing the Awareness of Rape
Prevention
The results of a recent study reveal that students' exposure to rape
prevention posters in first-year residence halls increased awareness and
helped to promote community safety. Educational posters were hung
in two residence halls, and after six weeks an online survey found that
first-year students reported an increased willingness to help others at
risk. Students felt that the posters depicted familiar people in familiar
situations, which increased their awareness of bystander intervention.
