business
operations
reported the highest levels of personal
interaction in traditional room set-ups
and the lowest levels in apartmentstyle arrangements.
Differences in levels of personal
interaction were also related to
whether or not the room type was
a single or a double. As might be
expected, a large majority (87 percent)
of first-year students reported having
a roommate, compared to only 47
percent of juniors and seniors. Those
who chose their roommates had
higher levels of personal interaction,
followed by those who did not choose
their roommates and those who did
not have a roommate. The difference
in these factors was broader for
first-year students than it was for
returning students. Additionally,
students who did not choose their
roommates had the strongest levels

of diverse interactions, followed by
those who chose their roommates and
those who did not have a roommate.
There were no surprises here either;
first-year students having an assigned
roommate had higher levels of diverse
interactions.
The EBI survey data can also reveal
which room types are assigned to new
and returning students and how this
can impact the student experience.
Competition with off-campus housing
or a limited inventory of available
spaces might drive an institution to
assign new students to singles or
apartments, but this shift should be
accompanied by changes in staffing
and programming that will focus
resources on enhancing diverse and
personal interactions. On the other
hand, an institution that assigns a
large number of returning students

to traditional double spaces may have
to consider ways to enhance overall
student satisfaction by, for example,
improving bathrooms and community
spaces or offering the opportunity to
shift from double rooms to singles as
space becomes available.
What is clear from this data is
the general observation that trends
are continually changing and
should be monitored, as well as the
specific observation that the student
experience is in fact significantly
impacted by their immediate living
space - singles, doubles, apartments,
private bathrooms, shared bathrooms
- and by whether or not they have
roommates. For this reason, higher
education institutions should
routinely review the types of housing
