accuracy and sustainability. Moving
forward, according to an independent
audit performed by Go Sustainable
Energy, LLC, it is anticipated that the
new windows will produce more than
4 percent savings on electricity costs
and more than 32 percent savings
on natural gas consumption. The
decision also was made to remove a
boiler and install 96 percent efficient
two-stage furnaces, reducing natural
gas and fan energy consumption. In
addition, five of the six condensing
units were replaced with higher
efficiency options. As a result, the
audit predicts an almost 15 percent
savings in annual cost as well as CO2
emissions. In all, more than $18,000
worth of sustainable energy rebates is
expected from Columbia Gas of Ohio
and American Electric Power.
Telling the
story
While the new building provides a
place for the work of ACUHO-I to be
accomplished, it was also designed
to be a place that honors the history
of the association, the profession it
represents, and the people who have
made it what it is.
Supported by a generous donation
from Southwest Contract and
assisted by Aurora Exhibit Solutions,
the interior of the building was
transformed. One of the first things
guests see as they enter the office
is a 25-foot high mural showcasing
campus housing scenes from around
the world, leaving little doubt about
the business being done here. Also
in the lobby is a 90-inch wide map
of the world that, as time passes,
will be dotted with pins marking the
home campuses of office visitors.
Meanwhile, the ACUHO-I Wall of
Honor features plaques honoring the
winners of a dozen separate awards as
well as the backstory of individuals for
whom some of the awards are named,
such as James Hurd, Betty Harrah, S.
Earl Thompson, Robert F. Cooke, Judy
Spain, and James Grimm.
On the building's second floor, a
series of panels tells the story of the
association's history, intertwined with
photographs of each past president. In
addition, as visitors enter the office's
conference room, they pass a display
spotlighting the important work of
the ACUHO-I Foundation, including
the names of all the past Parthenon
Award winners as well as major
donors.
In order to tell this story, a variety
of voices from ACUHO-I's history
were asked to share their memories
of the association's formative
years. Their stories show how far
the association - and the campus
housing profession as a whole - has
progressed. Fortunately, with this new
office, ACUHO-I is positioned to help
meet members' needs now and into
