disseminating information that will
encourage students to report incidents
of sexual harassment and sexual
violence, making them aware of
amnesty policies, developing materials
on what constitutes sexual violence,
and conducting periodic assessments
of student organizations and activities.
Many institutions already use
residence director and resident
assistant training as an opportunity
to provide information about how to
prevent and respond to incidents of
sexual harassment. At the minimum,
these presentations should include
clear definitions of what constitutes
sexual harassment and information
about laws and reporting. More
effective training could include
role-playing scenarios, bystander
intervention sessions, presentations
by survivors, or motivational
interviewing techniques. It is not only

paraprofessional student staff who
need to be trained in how to handle
and report cases of sexual harassment;
upper-level administrators who work
closely with students in the conduct
process also need more information.
Important sources include Title IX
conferences, NASPA (Student Affairs
Administrators in Higher Education),
and ACPA (College Student Educators
International).
The broader student population
can be reached through campus
programming. From orientation
presentations to student roundtable
discussions to pre-made bystander
intervention training programs,
such as The Green Dot program
and Red Flag Campaign, there are
many different options available for
institutions to successfully meet
this recommendation of the Dear
Colleague Letter. Jennifer Messina,

director of The Green Dot program,
explains the important role of the
community in preventing incidents
of sexual harassment. "Green Dot
strives to mobilize a broad base of the
campus community to do their part
to make campuses safer. Toward that
end we help all community members
see their role in this issue, we cue
them to potentially high-risk behaviors
that they may be in a position to
notice as bystanders, and we help
them generate realistic bystander
interventions that would work for
them. Our goal is to help faculty,
staff, and students integrate moments
of prevention into their daily lives
both in terms of intervening if they
see something high risk but also by
proactively letting people know that
this violence isn't okay with them."
