completed under an ambitious project
schedule. Most of the necessary work
was completed during the summer
between terms, which also required
the cooperation of vendors that had
to tightly manage shipment and
installation of their products.
Lauer says more than $1 million
was spent each week during the
project's summer work as the
crews cleaned up exposed conduits,
replaced all windows, installed new
mechanicals, provided individual
temperature control to each room, and
made other dramatic improvements.
Even though it was cost-prohibitive to
relocate restrooms, the existing ones

received an overhaul of new fixtures
and counters, and dividing the shower
areas into different partitions provided
significantly more privacy.
Much of the renovation
manifested itself in the common
areas of the hall. The floor plan
now boasts dramatic open spaces
highlighted with common kitchen
areas, fireplaces, and sitting areas
throughout the building. Several spots
in the hall feature "individual identity
spaces" that include chalkboard walls
and whiteboard tables. The rows of
computers and desks in the old labs
were replaced by large flatscreen
televisions that are available with
computer hookups for laptops.

Outside, there is a sand volleyball
court and a courtyard patio with seats,
a grill, and a fire pit that has proven to
be a popular gathering spot when the
weather cooperates.
Today 261 students call Slocum
Hall home. Approximately 60 percent
of them are first-year students, and
40 percent are in their second year.
It is also home to a substance-freeliving wing and an outdoor education
special interest community. Lauer
explains that a combination of the
room layout and a flexible assignment
process helps stress the concept of
integration between students, creating
situations where they are supported
in their college experience by others.
