like a residence hall. During their
renovations, Boykin explains that
they did little to change the hotel's
interior, for they had decided to
"use the furniture in the rooms and
supplement as needed" as a way to
keep renovation costs within budget.
In some cases, a converted
hotel can meet more than just the
need for residential space. What
IUPUI ended up with was not only a
residence hall but also 18,000 square
feet of classroom space and room
for the campus's first dining hall.
The additional space also enabled
them to offer extra amenities, such
as free laundering. They converted
what had been the hotel's staff
laundry facility into one that could
accommodate 560 students while at
the same time meeting the guidelines
for sustainability. They replaced the
outdated machines with "10 washers
and 10 dryers [that are] state-of-theart, energy efficient units," Hart says.
In the future, they hope to make the
system even more convenient by
allowing students to check whether the
washers and dryers are available via an
application that can be accessed by a
smartphone, tablet, or computer.
