W
hen Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast in late October
of 2012, its impact was felt both locally and around the
country. The New York Stock Exchange closed for two days.
Subways and road tunnels were closed due to extreme
flooding. Several hospitals were closed and evacuated.
In the midst of that, large parts of New York City and its
surrounding area lost power for up to five days. While
many people watched the consequences of the storm
play out from afar, residential staff at New York University
were in the throes of caring for their facilities and, more
importantly, their communities and individual students.
Yettieve Marquez, a residence hall director
at NYU, conducted rounds throughout her
building, not only establishing the presence of a
live-in professional, but also providing support
for residents and staff. On other parts of the
campus, buildings were open to students, staff,
and the local community. "During a time of
crisis, such as a natural disaster, I think it is
critical to assist all students and not limit our
services to our residential population. In the
aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, administrators
and staff opened our library and provided water
and coffee to anyone in the community. The
student center was a safe and warm location in
which all students were able to spend the night.
Warm meals were provided to anyone who was
affiliated with NYU, regardless of whether or
not the individual purchased a meal plan."
Marquez believes that, in a time of crisis,
it is the responsibility of campus professionals
to open their doors to all students, not just
those living in the residence halls. "Within the
mission statement of almost all institutions of
higher education, it is a core value to provide
holistic growth beyond the classroom setting. It
is important to note that a sense of community
can and should be fostered during a time of
crisis."

Acting as Stewards of
the Student Experience
The social responsibility of housing and residence
life staff extends beyond the response to natural
disasters and is manifested on the micro-level as
a response to students who experience personal
struggles and crises. Clare Cady, human services
resource center coordinator at Oregon State
University in Corvallis, works with students
facing a variety of personal challenges, many
of which are economic. Changes in access to
higher education, widely viewed as a positive
change, mean that campuses need to adjust the
resources available to students. But not every
campus is quick to adjust. "The reality currently
on college campuses is that there is a belief that
if a student is living in a residence hall, they are
not experiencing poverty. There are set-ups for
students living on campus, like having meal plans
that are not adequate, but a student may not be
able to afford more food. One of the things that
is becoming a roadblock is an assumption that
if students are there, they're fine and able to be
there. Staff are not keeping up about costs and
who the students are they are admitting," says
Cady.
