"will walk by and see what's going on.
They'll either come in, or we flag them
in." On the first knighting ceremony,
the faculty added some improvisational
pieces to the ceremony, including, as
Madsen explains, "a lacrosse stick that
I found somewhere random in the
building" in lieu of a proper knighting
sword.
The new tradition is intended to
bring a faculty member to light, as
well as to build a bridge for students
to "see that faculty members are
people too," Madsen says. While she
says she cannot speak for all of the
faculty, those "that I've worked with
really seem to enjoy it because it's a
fun way to interact with residents,
and there's no academic expectation."
The knighting ceremony is especially
enjoyable as "it gives them an
opportunity to connect to the residents

in a meaningful way."
The Order of the Elephants is
now an annual early to mid-September
event. Madsen has high hopes for
the tradition and hopes that it will
continue as an influx of first-year
students fills the halls in what might
otherwise seem like a foreign place.
Madsen hopes that the Order of the
Elephants, along with the knighting
ceremony, will foster healthy
relationships between live-in faculty
and residents, with a little bit of fun in
the process.
Bringing the community together
in entertaining, light-hearted ways is
effective in creating new traditions
and maintaining those of the past.
By connecting traditions that are
based on the beliefs and mission of
an institution in modern, relevant
ways, students are likely to not only

participate, but to also carry those
memories with them throughout their
lives.
Gloria Cecilia Belden Fernández,
chief housing officer at Universidad
de Monterrey in Nuevo León, Mexico,
explains that they offer a variety of
traditions under three major tiers:
academic, spiritual, and community
life.
The university prides itself on
being an educational community
inspired by Catholic principles and
one that encourages students to be
active and well rounded. Academic
achievements are rewarded at
recognition dinners held six times a
year. As Fernández explains, these are
events that "recognize the effort of
