of students. Housing professionals are
well positioned to help students who need
assistance with academic coursework and
want to take advantage of residentially based
tutoring and supplemental instruction, as
well as satellite academic advising. This focus
on academics means creating a culture in
which students readily discuss course content
in residence halls with peers and where
in-hall staff commit to engaging students
in conversations about their academic
experiences and to providing opportunities for
more student-faculty interactions.
Housing professionals can strengthen
the focus on academics by becoming familiar
with the learning outcomes of the institution's
general education curriculum, which can be
adjusted for residential curricula or livinglearning communities. In addition, housing
professionals are uniquely positioned to
motivate students to participate in the
residential programs being offered.
Find Supportive Staff
In a study of how faculty perceive community
in residence halls, authors Tom Ellett and
Anna Schmidt discuss the importance of
having a "shared sense of purpose," which
"is evidenced by the creation of an integrated
learning environment." This shared sense of
purpose not only defines the student affairs/
academic affairs partnership but also extends
to the selection and training of residential
staff. Ellett and Schmidt advise housing
professionals who are committed to partnering
they wanted to create an opportunity
for the lasting development of
community and academic excellence.
Faculty who choose to transform
their lives and live in the apartments
do so for different personal reasons.
For one professor, it was because
of his own experiences being a
transfer student and navigating
through a difficult time. Other faculty
with academic professionals to consider
selecting staff "who articulate a keen interest
in collaborating with faculty." Recruiting and
selecting supportive staff creates a culture
where academics comes first and the housing/
faculty partnership is strengthened by a shared
sense of purpose.
RAs have a crucial role to play in a
partnership with faculty. As students, they are
closer to faculty than virtually anyone else in
the housing organization. Many faculty know
very little about residence hall communities,
and when they volunteer to participate, they are
essentially stepping into unfamiliar territory.
As researchers Jörg Vianden and Kerri Smith
explain in their study of the discomfort that
some faculty express in working with students
outside the classroom, the residence hall "is an
entirely different environment for the faculty."
Though faculty may gracefully deliver weekly
lectures to hundreds of students, many feel
anxious about conducting a residence hall
program with 20 students. RAs can serve as
ambassadors for this environment and, as Ellett
and Schmidt note, they can be enormously
helpful in orienting faculty to life in the
residence hall, helping them understand how a
department works, and providing information
about resources and referrals that students
might need.
Advocate
College and university presidents, provosts,
and deans are keenly interested in retention
and graduation rates, and housing
do it because of the university's
commitment to students' well-rounded
excellence, and they are inspired to
be a part of that. Whatever the reason
for choosing to be part of this unique
experience, students and faculty alike
have shown that their understanding
of promoting students' academic and
social success ensures that students
will leave campus with much more
than a diploma.
