can provide general information
about faculty culture and specific
information about the faculty who
win teaching awards, excel at service,
and are especially student-focused.
Academic or career advisors or
other student affairs professionals
in academic colleges are also good
liaisons.
After a list of contacts has been
assembled, consider inviting prospective
academic partners to breakfast or lunch,
especially if there is access to dining
facilities. Use this informal setting to
build the relationship slowly, and talk
conceptually rather than beginning
with addressing program goals or
learning outcomes. If you are fortunate
to start out with already engaged faculty
members, use them to attract new
partners, perhaps again over lunch or
coffee.
Be Flexible
Faculty thrive on autonomy, flexibility,
and creativity. Within the parameters
of residential academic initiatives,
provide a variety of programs rather
than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
If standard educational programs work
and a faculty partner wants to present
several of these types of programs per
year, let them. If, on the other hand, a
professor is wholly committed to one
program per year, let them do that
as well. Flexibility should also be a
factor in decisions about the balance
between informal and formal events.
Most faculty will prefer initiatives
related to their academic discipline
and will appreciate the opportunity to
expand their promotion and tenure
portfolio. Other faculty may be more
interested in sharing hobbies with
students or inviting groups of students

on hikes, to sporting events, or to
the farmer's market. These informal
events humanize faculty for students
much more effectively than classroom
interactions can.
Create Meaningful
Opportunities
Some faculty may want to participate
in partnerships with student affairs
professionals in order to enhance or
revitalize their teaching, research, or
service experiences. For this reason,
create opportunities and rewards that
make it difficult for faculty to say no to
partnering with housing operations.
The biggest carrot for most faculty
will be publication opportunities.
Housing professionals should seek
faculty for collaboration on rigorous
assessment of the student experience
in residence halls, the residence
