University in St. Louis, Missouri, agrees
that it is quite common for student
veterans to experience a combination
of depression, mood disorders, and
substance abuse. She is a 25-year
veteran who has continued her military
involvement as a naval reservist, and
the breadth and depth of her expertise
as a mental health counselor added to
her advanced certifications in substance
abuse and trauma is a rare combination.
She stresses the importance of
establishing a sense of community
and connection for veterans as they
integrate into their college experience
and notes that "Many veterans simply
want their uniqueness to be known
to those in the university community,
such as their leadership potential."
Peer mentor programs, student
government, and the wide variety of
student organizations that promote
extracurricular involvement are great
platforms to integrate leadership skills
and experiences that are inherent with
veterans.

Though the vast majority of student
veterans do not live on campus, some
are able to take advantage of specialized
housing options. Amanda Hostetter,
an Air Force veteran and nursing
student at The Ohio State University in
Columbus, lives in the Veterans House
on campus with nine other veterans
from all branches of service. For her, the
quality of the physical space was among
the most important considerations
when she decided to make the transition
from commuter to residential student
in her second year. "It's not just some
dorm or some apartment; it's a house
with beautiful furniture and beautiful
furnishings. Most have owned our
own homes or lived on our own before,
and we would not want to take a step
backwards." Janet Steinbacher, assistant
director for residence life at Ohio State,
works with the Veterans House and
says she has frequently heard residents
express gratitude for the opportunity to
live independently with fellow student
veterans who have a basic level of
shared experience. "I kept hearing, 'I
am so thankful for this house, I'm so
thankful that I don't have an 18-year-old
roommate.'"
Accessibility amenities are another
important consideration. At the
University of Florida, one floor of a new
residence, Cypress Hall, which is slated
to open in 2015, will be dedicated to
housing students with higher levels of
physical disabilities, some of whom may
be veterans. Thirty-five spaces in the
hall will include features such as motion
sensor doors and a SureHands® lift
system for students with mobility
challenges and strobe lights for students
with hearing impairments. In addition,
