Initiatives help new employees build a winning custodial team.
Higher education, and specifically
campus housing management, has
long understood the importance
of team-building and orientation
programs for new employees. Without
a structured orientation program,
the first few weeks on the job might
resemble Jackie Robinson's entrance
into Major League Baseball. Robinson
broke the color barrier when Branch
Rickey, general manager of the
Brooklyn Dodgers, picked him to play
first base for the Dodgers in 1947.

As the first African-American to play
Major League Baseball, Robinson
was ostracized by many, including
fans, opposing teams, and even his
own teammates. How many of us can
imagine this kind of isolation on the
first day of a new job?
Perhaps that comparison is a bit
harsh or extreme, but new staff in
any position can feel isolated, though
for different reasons; they don't yet
have a connection to their job or
their colleagues and thus feel isolated
and uncertain. Even if a department
follows one of the current onboarding
trends - using videos to transmit
important information about policies
and programs - this serves only to
counter the employee's uncertainty,
not the isolation. The new employee is
still often left sitting by themselves at
their desk or in a conference room for

concerns that impact one's performance.
Hire staff to accomplish work to
established standards.
