staff in move-in by placing welcome
decorations on the doors of their
floor closets, they are showing staff
that they acknowledge their work and
its purpose. Residence life staff can
also recognize custodial service by
displaying banners and posters or by
providing treats to celebrate their work
accomplishments or milestones.
New staff also need to be kept
in the loop through newsletters,
staff meetings, and drop-in visits
by supervisors. At Florida State
University in Tallahassee, they try to
add some personal touches by having
a member of the senior management
team deliver a birthday card to each
staff member. They also send out
a message called "The Morning
Line" each day in order to share an
inspirational or motivational quotation
or a riddle, to recognize birthdays,
to provide updates on significant
campus announcements, and to give
reminders about work going on in a
particular hall such as a brief water
outage.
Our staff want to be welcomed
to our organizations on their first
day on the job, and they want to feel
valued and appreciated throughout
their employment. Robinson would
have had an even more difficult time
finding his place with the Dodgers
and within Major League Baseball if
he hadn't had the sympathetic support
of Pee Wee Reese, his team captain
and shortstop. During a game in
Cincinnati, Robinson was the target
of racist and abusive comments from
fans and opposing players. In a quiet
statement of support, Reese walked
over to him, put his arm across his
shoulder, and chatted like they were
old friends. And he did this not as
a white man but as a colleague. We

cannot underestimate the value of
setting staff up to succeed in a new
job, and we cannot minimize the
responsibility we bear to recognize and
showcase the contribution they are
making to our departments.
