prevalent on campus and more
campuses become hubs of information,
it is imperative that staff have up-to-date

different meetings and conversations.

where everyone on campus
understands that sexual violence is
unacceptable, survivors receive the
services they need and perpetrators
are held accountable." In reaction,
presidents from 24 public colleges in
Ontario announced that they would
form a task force to create policies
that could uniformly be used by all
post-secondary institutions across the
province.
One of the brightest spotlights
came from the White House when
President Barack Obama created a task
force focused on preventing student
sexual assault. He announced the
project with the words, "we need to
keep saying to anyone out there who
has ever been assaulted: you are not
alone. We have your back. I've got your
back," and this has led to educational
resources via the Not Alone website
and, later, educational and public
awareness programs through the It's
On Us campaign.

violence incidents challenges housing
and residence life programs and
the institution as a whole, due to
the ethical and emotional tangles of
such a powerful topic as well as the
legal issues that surround it. Many
discussions of campus assaults point
to Title IX legislation. Officially titled
Title IX of the Education Amendments
of 1972, it is roundly used by campus
cultures, the public, and the media to
describe any disciplinary action and
government intervention connected
to sexual assault. According to
information provided by the U.S.
Department of Education to the
Huffington Post, as of October 2014,
there were 85 campuses in the U.S.
that faced investigation of their
handling of gender-based violence
cases. Title IX's true design, however,
is to assist all stakeholders who seek to
combat sexual violence on college and
university campuses with appropriate
protocol, legal advice, and resources.
Enacted in 1972, it is a legal statute
