FACILITIES
After-hours safety escorts are also
now available by contacting the ECU
police or student safety patrol officers,
who are equipped with walkie-talkies
that provide direct access to police.
The university has also invested
in a campus-wide communication
system utilizing text messages,
email, and Twitter as well as a
public address system that alerts the
campus community in the event of an
emergency.
ECU's safety and security
efforts extended far beyond physical
changes and stepped-up services. The
Campus Living office provided more
residence hall programming focused
on safety and strengthened the
physical presence of police officers by
pairing them with specific residence
halls and including them in floor
meetings. As part of its campus-wide
efforts, ECU began offering Rape
Aggression Defense training classes

for students, faculty, and staff. This
four-class program for women teaches
physical and non-physical means
of self-defense. Another option,
Resisting Aggression with Defense, is
a four-class program for men, which
teaches them how to increase their
awareness of aggressive behavior, to
recognize the impact of such behavior,
and to avoid and reduce aggression.
In addition, participation in the
educational modules of a program
called Safe and Sound is now required
for all incoming first-year students.
This instruction teaches them not
only about safety on campus but also
about protecting themselves away
from home and online. In addition
to strengthening their presence in
residence halls, police officers now
take part in orientation sessions,
speaking to students and parents
about crime prevention and safety
awareness.

NEW

With these improvements in
place, the next step will be to continue
the assessment and see if the desired
results are achieved. As before, that
information will then be shared.
What students at ECU can now be
sure of is that their voices can make a
difference. 
