Another way to trust others' expertise
is to utilize sub-groups and allow them
to have purview over their respective
areas. As Wamelink says, "When
detailed decisions and discussions
don't involve the entire project team, it
is better for those discussions to occur
with the relevant parties outside of the
project team."
Project management does not
end when the last brick is laid in a
new building or the lights are turned
out after a program concludes. The
remaining step is to assess the project.
There are several different metrics that
can define a project's success, and what
those metrics are and how they will be
utilized is something that should be
determined early in the project plan
and well before major initiatives begin.
Some of these measures can be cut and
dried. Did the project get completed
on time? Was it finished within the
budget guidelines? Did resident
retention percentages rise? Or the
goals may be less tangible. Did the hall
program result in the desired student
learning outcomes? Does the addition
of new amenities increase student
satisfaction scores? Many colleges and
universities employ a divisional or
campus assessment professional who
can provide objective measures for
success and help clearly assess progress
made toward goals. Project managers
should also ask team members to
contribute their thoughts on the project
experience. This feedback is valuable in
determining improvements that can be
made when the next project occurs.
