Open for Excellence
In an established partnership with Rooms
To Go, Fayetteville State University (FSU)
in North Carolina has transformed three
lounge spaces into reading rooms for oncampus students as part of an initiative that
grew from the organization's committee to
promote literacy. Rooms To Go researchers
found that a number of colleges and
universities were moving forward with
Quality Enhancement Programs, which
include an element designed to promote
greater literacy among college students. To
that end, Reading for Excellence Centers
have been established in a number of
residence halls at Historically Black Colleges
and Universities.
At FSU, plush rooms adorned with end
tables, lamps, couches, chairs, and accent
décor items have permitted students and
staff to utilize these spaces to continue
efforts to bridge the gap between the
classroom and the residential environment.
To date, the spaces have been used to host
numerous lectures, study sessions, residence
hall programs, and staff training sessions.
Similar reading rooms have been set up at
Talladega College in Alabama.
