encouraged to do the reaching themselves. Jon Coleman, associate
director for student learning and engagement at the University of
Florida in Gainesville, has noticed this difference. "Faculty get very
few messages from their supervisors about partnering or collaborating
that we are aware of. The strongest support we receive is from
administration in academic units. As a large research institution, we are
not the primary focus of faculty."
Brent Waller, director of residence life at Colorado School of the
Mines in Golden, sees a benefit in the top-down messaging that they
receive. "We have had a push on our campus to have this be a more
residential campus concept from the president. The president made a
major goal when he first got here to have a well-rounded and integrated
experience. Additionally, our vice president and dean of students
has strongly encouraged us to collaborate more and attempt to reach
across the aisle. Also, our provost has mentioned the importance of the
residential experience in speeches and newsletters after seeing some
tangible results."
Coleman believes that faculty involved in residence halls can benefit
from directly seeing their impact on students. "It also allows faculty to
stay current on their students' issues, concerns, and thoughts about
school. It provides them the opportunity to share what's important to
them to students. In turn, it improves classroom management and
instruction for faculty simply by understanding students better."
Students respond better to faculty involvement in the residence
halls, Coleman finds, if the topic is focused on careers, involves some
kind of academic advising, or offers unique opportunities such as
making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. "General interest programs do
not draw crowds, though those who attend express appreciation and
enjoyment of the events. The problem is usually not one of quality of
faculty involvement, but rather convincing students of the value of
engaging in that involvement."
