For all the recognizable benefits to
residence life staff, faculty, and students of a
residence life/faculty partnership, there are
also obstacles to a successful relationship.
Those obstacles, often left unnamed, are
what prevent faculty from accepting offers to
collaborate or make them hesitant. Cutler sees
time as a roadblock, recognizing that faculty
involvement with residence life is considered
volunteer work and does not help them with
the tenure process. Also, faculty workdays
may not follow a traditional 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
schedule, so they may be on campus for only
a few hours each day, which may not align
with student availability. For some faculty,
though, the issue is not the time commitment
- it's the comfort level of the work. As
Cutler explains, "For some faculty, it can be
uncomfortable to go inside the residence hall.
The hall is the students' home, and faculty
may feel like they are intruding. They may
have these fears or concerns about seeing a
student in a towel or their pajamas or doing
something the faculty member doesn't want
to see. I've found that most faculty members
want a structured role when being invited into
the halls."
Cutler invites faculty into the residence
halls to conduct a house calls program, where
they meet with students along with a resident
assistant with whom they are paired. "They
spend a chunk of time going door to door on
their designated floor getting to meet and talk
with students. They ask about their experience
at the university and how classes are going.
The resident assistant is there to help facilitate
conversation because they already know the
residents on the floor and can introduce the
faculty member."
Waller notes that faculty are more
likely to commit to an event when they
are approached by a student staff member
working in collaboration with the professional
staff member. "We typically try to frame the
opportunity as one that allows the faculty
member to more holistically understand
students from inside and outside the
classroom. We ask our residents and student
staff what faculty members they are interested
in hosting in the residence halls based on who
they enjoy in the classroom," explains Waller.
Faculty partnerships with residence life
do not have to be based in programming or
living-learning communities. In fact, these
