partnerships don't even have to focus
on the students. At the University
of Wisconsin-La Crosse, faculty are
asked to do what they do best - teach
- but to the residence life staff rather
than students. "Our utilization of
faculty for professional development
started a few years ago when we
needed to consider ideas that were
less expensive than traveling to
conferences," says Lisa Weston, a hall
director. Weston approaches faculty
she knows about presenting and also
asks students for recommendations.
Faculty present for 90 minutes,
always on an area that blends their
own research interests with the work
that residence life staff is doing. A
political science professor presented
on working with undocumented
students and shared her personal
story and her knowledge of legal
implications. A student affairs faculty
member and a psychology professor

presented on their ongoing research
on engaging straight, white, collegeage males in conversations about
social justice and privilege.
Because faculty aren't always
familiar with the work that residence
life does on campus, Weston sits
down with each faculty member
before the presentation to review
their presentation outline and ensure
that they understand their audience
for the session. "Our most recent
presentation was by a psychology
professor. I sat down with him twice
before the presentation. We talked
in depth about the work residence
life staff members do, how we
help students succeed, and what
our educational backgrounds are.
Residence life can be hard for others
on campus to understand," says
Weston.
These professional development
sessions are beneficial for both
