internal constituents, an interesting
dynamic exists when a group
organizer takes issue with something
we need to do. We need faculty to
buy in to the idea that checkout truly
is at 11:00 a.m. in our guest units or
that summer conference groups must
maintain a certain ratio of staff to
guests. When an academic discipline
demands critical thought, it doesn't
stop at evaluating the administrative
processes of a campus service
provider. We spend time trying to
educate up front and to be clear about
the intent of our practices. With a
better understanding of intent, they
seem to buy in more," says StoneSewalish.
Regardless of the type of
involvement faculty have with
residence life staff on campus, there
will always be a disconnect between
the two groups. However, as Stone-

Sewalish notes, that divide may not be
a terrible thing for both parties. "We
can't expect faculty to understand our
day to day. Similarly we can't expect to
understand their day to day. Of course
faculty members, who are trained
in critical thinking and inquiry, will
have questions and even perhaps
see some of our work as arbitrary.
We can't forget our empathy and
desire not just to inform, but to bring
faculty into the fold, ask for their
feedback, and show genuine interest
in helping them by being partners.
We can't just ask faculty to show up
and present what we think is essential
or follow a process we didn't bother
to explain. We widen the gap between
student affairs and faculty when we
levy upon them the expectation of
understanding what we do. That's the
nature of living in silos that share the
same square mile." 
