to follow. Therefore, the residence
halls on campus are used as a
laboratory for learning. Pomona
opened two LEED Platinum
residence halls, Sontag and Pomona
halls, in June of 2011. These halls
house approximately 150 students
in suite-style apartments, as well
as the Outdoor Education Center
and a rooftop classroom used
for education that focuses on the
building's energy-conservation
features. In addition to native plants
and drought-tolerant species, they
planted fruit trees to promote an
understanding of where food comes
from. Sontag and Pomona are the
first residence halls in California
to achieve LEED Platinum and the
second large-scale new residence
hall project in the nation. Pomona
adopted green standards in 2002-03,
and in 2006 they required that all
new construction be built to LEED
Gold standards. The success of
the project was largely due to early
involvement of a residence hall task
force made up of students, faculty,
and staff. William Village North at
the University of Colorado Boulder
received LEED Platinum recognition
and was the first of its size, a 500bed residence hall, in the nation to
receive this honor. This living and
learning laboratory is home to two
residential academic programs:
Sustainable by Design and the Social
Entrepreneurship for Equitable
Development and Sustainability
(SEEDS) honor program.
The pursuit of LEED certification,
whether it is a requirement or a
choice, is more of a reality for college
and university campuses today
than ever before. LEED certification
recognizes a university's commitment
to sustainability and the commitment
of all who played a part in the design
process. Beyond the economic and
environmental benefits of green
buildings, pursuing LEED certification
validates a college and university's
commitment to environmental
sustainability while fulfilling the desire
of prospective students that their
campus exemplify an environmental
consciousness. LEED certification
simply and clearly communicates a
commitment to sustainability and the
institution's role as a steward of the
environment.
