continue reading. Finally, the piece
could end with a discussion question,
prompt, or other element to keep
readers engaged. Perhaps it would
ask readers to include their residence
hall activity stories or experiences, or
the blog could link to a piece about
programming strategies. Either way,
the audience is asked to participate by
contributing or learning more.
Thinking about bloggers and
assessment does not mean that
everyone needs to get online and start
writing assessment blogs. Instead,
the lesson is one of engagement as
a deliberate goal of sharing. How
can one best shape an assessment
report or presentation differently with
the goal of building engagement?
How might the content be
personalized? What are the next steps
of engagement, and how are they
prompted?
In some situations, the purpose
of an assessment report is about
more than just sharing or engaging.
Sometimes, this report must drive
others to take action. To think
about this issue, we turn to lessons
from another type of storyteller - a
preacher. When exploring literary
movements, Donna Campbell,
associate professor and vice chair
of the English Department at
Washington State University in
Pullman, traced the five distinct
parts of the preacher approach back
to ancient Rome and Cicero. She
declared that a preacher's model
begins with a specific piece of text
that is read, defined, paraphrased,
and explained. It then moves on to
doctrine, where the text is placed
