Book Highlights
Millennials'
Contributions to
the Workforce
"Every 20 years or so, a
new generation enters the
workforce, and the rest of us,
quite frankly, freak out about
it."
This statement is made
early on in the new book
When Millennials Take
Over by Jamie Notter and
Maddie Grant. Though
it sounds like a brash,
controversial statement, the
book is actually an upbeat
and optimistic look at the
qualities that the Millennial
generation has brought, and
will continue to bring, to
the workforce.
Grant and Notter
identify four organizational
qualities that speak to
Millennial workers: Digital,
Clear, Fluid, and Fast.
The authors draw from
interviews and survey data
to provide information on
ways that organizations can
consider these categories to
better serve their customers
and their employees. What
separates this book from
many others is that it
presents the generational
differences as something
that could be leveraged
to improve an existing
business versus something
that must be overcome.

Office on Violence Against Women Announces New
Online Resource
In August, the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women (OVW)
launched The Center for Changing Our Campus Culture online. Created specifically for
institutions of higher education, this site provides "the latest information, materials and
resources for campus administrators, faculty and staff, as well as campus and community law
enforcement, victim service providers, students, parents and other key stakeholders to use to
improve campus safety," according to a press release from OVW. Members can find this new
resource at www.changingourcampus.org/.

Hiring RAs with Disabilities
In the world of hiring decisions, one principle stands above the rest:
providing equal opportunity for all candidates. What happens, though,
when a student staff candidate presents with a need for accommodation
related to a medical, psychological, or learning disability? Housing
departments can work with campus partners like human resources or
their disabilities office to develop individualized, creative, and cost-effective
solutions to provide the best work environment for these candidates.
Carl Crowe, associate dean of students and director of residence life at
Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, says that his department
is using cost-effective, text-to-speech applications and upgraded duty cell
phones to assist employees with hearing impairments. "We're using the
technology the students are already using."
Some institutions are using a universal design approach by, for
example, making sure that the physical space and the amount of physical
activity involved with the work meets the students' needs. Marie Lalor and
Adam Lalor recently presented on this topic at the ACUHO-I
annual conference. To learn more about it, check out their
presentation in the online library at www.acuho-i.org.
