Caring for Personal
Care Attendants

Special Olympics World Games
From July 26 to August 2, athletes, coaches, and support staff flooded
the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), for the
Special Olympics World Games. Suzanne Seplow, director of residential
life, says that they hosted about 3,500 athletes. "We had welcoming
committees when the athletes arrived, both by our students and student
staff who are here in the summer and by our professional staff. The
athletes and their coaches ate in our dining facilities, hung out in our
lounges, and gave high fives and hugs all throughout the week!" Jason
Walley, director of sales for conference services, estimates that they served
115,500 meals and used 90 buses to transport athletes and coaches to and
from the opening and closing ceremonies. Assistant Vice Chancellor for
Campus Life Mick Deluca added that the event "intersected the entire
campus which included eight of our sport and recreation venues hosting
eight of the medal competitions, and then the open spaces and plazas of
the campus creating a festival and village feel."
Figuring out how to
accommodate a Personal Care
Attendant (PCA) for a special
needs student can be complex.
Do you give them a meal plan
and a parking pass? Does
the university need to run a
background check on them, or
does the service they are hired
through do that? Do you charge
for the housing space that the
assistant occupies? These are just
a few questions that assignment
professionals find themselves
asking. Kathryn Magura,
assistant director of operations
at Oregon State University in
Corvallis, explains that they make
a contract addendum with the
student to outline expectations
of working with the personal
assistant and communicate to
the student resident that they
are responsible for the actions of
the PCA. With regards to having
big enough rooms to house a
student with their PCA, Housing
Director Joe Paulick from
Florida International University
in Miami notes that they have
designed several studios to
accommodate students with their
attendants.
