part one began on January 7, 2015,
and ended on July 29. Invitations
were sent to every primary contact in
ACUHO-I's membership database,
both members and non-members,
who granted us permission to email
them. Respondents to part one were
asked to provide contact emails for
the next nine surveys, including the
one on conference services. There
were 398 responses out of 1,516
invitations, a 26 percent response
rate. Administration of the conference
services portion began on March 4 and
ended on March 27. There were 95
responses out of 206 provided emails,
a 46 percent response rate.
One of the most common
misconceptions about summer
conferences operations is that
they predominantly serve athleticoriented youth groups. In fact,
there is a wide variety in the groups
hosted and in the ages of conference
participants. Though the data show
that respondents, on average, housed
52 percent youth guests, they also
housed a significant number of adult
guests (31 percent), as well as collegeage groups (20 percent) meeting for
orientation. Campuses that do host
mostly youth groups have a diverse
range of offerings that stretch beyond
those oriented to athletics. At the
University of Florida in Gainesville,
"about 70 percent of our conference
business is composed of youth
groups. These include academic
camps, sports groups, religious
camps, and music groups (and many
more)," says T.J. Logan, director of
housing. "The adult groups that we
host include groups affiliated with
professional associations, groups tied
to an academic program, and even the
Society for the Preservation of Natural
History Collections." Survey results
reveal a wide variety of programs
served by conference operations, with
athletically based groups accounting
for 26 percent of summer groups,
academic or educationally focused
groups for 38 percent, professional
and adult programs for 18 percent, and
first-year orientation programs for 17
percent.
Though the market for conference
programs is already broad, it could
easily be expanded. Faculty and
staff conferences, which are often
scheduled for summer months, offer
a tremendous opportunity to expand
our services. In addition, hosting the
same group from year to year can
create a sense of brand loyalty. This
reliable source of revenue has helped
the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
provide opportunity for growth
and institutional exposure. Marc
