group that comes to their campus each
year. For 40 years, the Experimental
Aircraft Association (EAA) has been
staying on their campus, and this year
they filled 5,000 beds over 12 nights.
The number of guests residing on
campus may be influenced by several
factors, including different needs
related to orientation, summer school,
construction, and total availability and
allocated inventory. Survey results
show that 16 percent of respondents
said they housed 1,000 guests or
fewer, 16 percent housed 1,001-2,000
guests, 9 percent housed 2,001-3,000
guests, 10 percent housed 3,001-4,000,
and 11 percent housed 4,001-5,000.
Interestingly, 10 percent said they
housed 9,000-12,000, which is an
incredible number of guests. These
numbers are informative, but future
correlation between staffing structure
and total guests and correlation with
institution type would provide some
important additional details. Assuming
that a large flagship institution is
housing a large number of camps and
conferences is just as problematic as
assuming that small private schools
house a smaller number. Usage of
total inventory and frequency of group
arrival, along with length of stay, all
impact this statistic.
Regarding the number of groups
hosted, including orientation groups,
the highest frequency of response
indicated 6-10 total. Institutions
that fell into the categories of 31-40
programs, 51-75 programs, and 100-200
programs each commanded 11 percent
of respondents. Although housing
inventory may play an important
part in the number of programs that
each institution serves, other factors
may include group type and campus
needs. Future questions related to
average length of stay may help better
illuminate this area.
Survey data focusing on total bed
allocation was informative as well: 64
percent of institutional respondents
allocated more than 60 percent of their
total housing inventory for summer
conference operations in fiscal year
