percentage of youth groups that attend
conferences on college and university
campuses, there is increasing concern
about training both professional and
student staff. A solid 100 percent of
institutions indicated that professional
staff receive training on mandatory
reporting, while 69 percent indicated
that student staff receive this training.
A high percentage of respondents (97
percent) indicated that professional
staff are required to have a background
check, while 75 percent had the same
requirement for student staff. In
addition, 93 percent of institutions
required some kind of training on
working with youth for professional
staff, while 85 percent reported
that the same training is required
for student staff. The disparity
in the requirements for student
and professional staff is especially

interesting given that student staff are,
as indicated above, most likely to be in
front-desk positions where interaction
with youth campers is likely quite
significant. At the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh, all full-time and
student staff are required to receive
training on the state mandatory
reporting laws. This training is offered
online and requires an assessment
at the end. Additionally, they work
with the staff from conference
groups to discuss background check
requirements, best practices, and how
they protect their youth campers.
Most respondents (76 percent)
indicated that they require conference
groups unaffiliated with their
institution to have a certain level of
insurance coverage. Because states
have different laws related to liability
and tort, it's not necessarily surprising

to see this. In addition, 66 percent of
campuses that require insurance set
a minimum coverage of more than
$1 million no matter the size of the
group. Future data collected should
ask specific questions regarding what
aspects of the insurance coverage may
or may not be waived.
When asked about emerging
trends in conference services, many
of those interviewed spoke specifically
about amenities. As Logan notes, "The
emerging trend that we have seen is
the interest in recreation facilities for
guests. While we have always seen
the need for sports camps to have
access to these types of facilities, our
adult guests have been very excited
about the opportunity to use gym
and recreational facilities as part of
their stay. At the University of Florida
